Carol is a highly qualified, very experienced fire engineer with over 27 years providing fire engineering services. She has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Fire Engineering from the University of Maryland, USA. The University of Maryland is the pre-eminent institution in the United States offering bachelor degrees in fire engineering. Her Masters degree is in Safety from the University of Southern California.
Carol is a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand, a Chartered Professional Engineer and on the IPENZ International Engineering Register. She has actively participated in IPENZ and was Branch Chair for Canterbury as well as assisting with professional assessments.
In addition, she is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of California, and has been active in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers in the USA as well as NZ. Her involvement has included President of the Northern California – Nevada Chapter, and also member of qualifications and membership committees.
Carol was a key player in establishing and running the highly successful fire engineering company Caldwell Consulting Ltd. This company was sold to AC Consulting in 2002.
Outside of fire engineering she spends time with husband Charley, and children Conrad and Catherine. That often involves time with friends, good wine, cooking, chocolate, cycling and given the opportunity indulging in a good book.
Dr. Charles Fleishmann

Charley has over 20 years’ experiences in a wide variety of fire engineering activities. He has Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Fire and Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland, USA. The University of Maryland is the pre-eminent institution in the United States offering bachelor degrees in fire engineering. In addition, he has a Masters in Engineering in Mechanical engineering and a PhD in Fire Protection Engineering Science from the University of California, at Berkeley.
Charley is well recognised within the fire engineering field both within New Zealand and internationally. He has published numerous articles, papers and chapters in books on different aspects of fire engineering. He serves on the editorial board for Journal of Fire Protection Engineering and Fire Technology. He is a member of the executive committee of the International Association of Fire Safety Scientists.
He has been an independent fire engineering consultant since 1987 working on a variety of projects. He has extensive fire computer modelling expertise including liaising and helping to validate the CFD fire computer model Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) USA. He has also provided fire investigation services on a number of projects within New Zealand and the United States. Other areas of expertise include radiative heat transfer, furniture flammability and experimental fire research.
Charley was a volunteer fire fighter and is familiar with fire fighting activities. He has worked with the NZ Fire Services developing training modules.
